WhatsApp cracks down on abuse and bans 8.4 million Indian accounts in August 2024: how to keep your profile safe

Meta-owned WhatsApp banned more than eight million accounts in India in a single month, as part of its ongoing efforts to combat abuse and enforce its privacy policies. According to WhatsApp’s latest transparency report, 8,458,000 Indian accounts were blocked in August 2024, marking a significant increase in enforcement measures.

This report has been published in accordance with the Indian Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021.

According to the report, these bans were largely driven by WhatsApp’s proactive detection mechanisms. Of the total banned accounts, 1,661,000 were reported and banned before user complaints were filed. This early detection was made possible through automated systems designed to monitor suspicious patterns of behavior, such as mass messaging, a common precursor to scams or misuse of the platform.

The August report also highlights that 10,707 user complaints were received through WhatsApp’s complaints mechanisms. These complaints, which were addressed to its India complaints manager via email and postal mail, included concerns such as ban calls, account support, security issues and other user-related issues . Of the complaints received, WhatsApp acted on 93 cases.

WhatsApp generally bans accounts for several reasons, including violating its terms of service, such as spamming or sending mass messages. Accounts involved in illegal activities, as per Indian law, are also reported and promptly banned. The platform further responds to user complaints, including cases of abusive, harassment or inappropriate behavior.

WhatsApp abuse detection works in three key stages: during the registration process, throughout user activity on the platform, and in response to user comments. This system analyzes the context of user interactions, allowing it to detect and act on suspicious or harmful behavior. When inappropriate activity is detected, WhatsApp will temporarily suspend the account or issue a permanent ban, depending on the severity of the violation.
