macOS 15 Sequoia: here’s all the new features available on your Mac

macOS Sequoia is the name of macOS 15, which will be available on all top Apple Macs and MacBooks in the fall. Announced at WWDC 2024 and currently available in the macOS Sequoia beta, the main feature is, of course, Apple Intelligence. By making its own public beta available, Apple has embedded artificial intelligence into every corner of macOS, offering generative tools for images and text, file organization, and more.

Plus, there’s an impressive new iPhone Mirroring feature that lets you use any iPhone on your Mac, even when it’s in standby mode. There’s a new tiling feature in Windows, as well as a new Passwords app.

Apple Intelligence

Apple Intelligence, compatible only with Macs powered by Apple silicon, will arrive early this year in macOS Sequoia for English-speaking users in the US.

Siri finally gets a whole new look that can review the apps you use every day, as well as show detailed results that will keep you aware of what you do every day on your Mac.

With Apple Intelligence, you can also create custom emojis called Genmoji. At any time, ask the service in Messages or Mail and a unique emoji will appear.

Writing tools are also available with Apple Intelligence. If you want to change the text of your email response to a more casual tone, tapping the icon to the left of the text will allow you to do so.

Apple also confirmed that it is working with OpenAI for ChatGPT 4.0 functionality.

At any time, you will receive a notification to transfer data from your device. ChatGPT will also be able to process images shared with it, allowing you to ask questions about documents, files, and more. Like Apple Intelligence, you can also ask ChatGPT to write a brief for you.

Continuity – iPhone Mirroring

Developers have been doing this for years when building apps – mirroring their iPhone to a Mac can help them see how their apps work directly on macOS.

In the case of Sequoia, it reaches the everyday user in a new way. Imagine you docked your iPhone next to your Mac while it’s charging and you want to quickly check Snapchat or Instagram. With this new Continuity feature, your iPhone will appear on your Mac, and you’ll be able to use the keyboard and trackpad to navigate your device.

You can also drag and drop files as you wish – saving you the headache of having to use AirDrop or the Files app.

Do you have multiple windows open when using your Mac? Thanks to Sequoia, you’ll finally be able to do them automatically.

This is a feature similar to one that Windows users have been using for years. You’ll be able to automatically arrange multiple windows so you can see all your active apps at once. Not only can you drag windows with your mouse or trackpad, but you can also move apps to tile positions using dedicated keyboard shortcuts.

New backgrounds

A brief mention, but a useful feature nonetheless. With Sequoia, you’ll be able to change the background in almost any video conferencing application.

Password app

Available on iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia, the new Apple Passwords app lets you see every account you’ve ever created and used without having to go to the Settings app.

The new app has everything from keys to Wi-Fi passwords.

Safari

Safari has a huge new feature called Highlighting. This uses machine learning to detect relevant information on any website, such as music, videos and more. A highlighter can also summarize a web page in an easy-to-read paragraph.

The reader has been redesigned for macOS Sequoia. Now can display table of contents and summary on web pages.

Gambling

Mac gaming goes to the next level in Sequoia with Game Porting Toolkit 2. Now also available for iPad and iPhone, it offers improved support for Windows games such as ray tracing.

macOS will also get several new big titles, including Prince of Persia, Frostpunk 2, World of Warcraft: The War Within and Control. As announced ahead of WWDC 2024, Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 7 will also be coming to Mac, iPhone and iPad.

Let’s not forget – most of the features available in iOS 18 are also available in macOS Sequoia. From improved features in Messages like formatting and better clicks, to on-device categorization in Mail that lets you sort your emails into different categories, there’s a lot you can do later this year.

But wait, there’s more! The updated Calculator app allows users to view previous calculations along with history, so they can see their expressions as they type. The calendar shows events and tasks from Reminders, making it easier to view, edit, and complete tasks throughout the day. The updated month view also makes it easier to quickly view events and reminders throughout the month.

The Notes app is getting smarter, allowing you to take detailed and well-written notes. Apple Intelligence’s new audio transcription and summarization features allow the Mac to take notes for you, so you can be present when you need to capture details about what’s happening. If they want to quickly crunch a number, they can simply type in the equation and it will automatically solve in the note.

macOS Sequoia is available for developer beta download now, but will be released to the public in the fall.
