MATRADE partners with Amazon Global to increase cross-border e-commerce transactions for Malaysian brand owners

The Malaysian External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and Amazon have announced that they have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance the export opportunities of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia.

Under the agreement, both parties will join forces to spearhead the “Go Global with Amazon and MATRADE” initiative, which will help brand owners and sellers in Malaysia leverage cross-border business opportunities with Amazon Global Selling, MATRADE said in a statement on Friday.

It is important to note that Amazon Global Selling helps companies from anywhere in the world start a global business, build international brands, and reach hundreds of millions of active Amazon customer accounts around the world.

MATRADE and Amazon will work together to raise awareness and provide essential knowledge on cross-border e-commerce to brand owners and sellers in Malaysia.

Amazon Global Selling will share insights and expertise, facilitate training workshops, and guide companies through the entire Amazon seller journey, including account registration, product preparation, listing, shipping, advertising, and more.

MATRADE and Amazon will work closely to showcase the success stories of Malaysian sellers selling abroad on Amazon – for example in stores in the United States and European Union, inspiring and motivating other local small business owners to start their cross-border business with Amazon Global Selling.

Additionally, MATRADE will support and promote Amazon Global Selling training activities among relevant local actors, including enterprises, authorities and business associations, to increase their participation.

The Memorandum of Understanding will strengthen and open new opportunities for MATRADE and Amazon’s cooperation, which started in 2021.

“We are excited to partner with Amazon in our efforts to empower Malaysian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in international markets,” said Reezal Merican Naina Merican, CEO of MATRADE.

“This MoU underlines our commitment to help them, leverage e-commerce to expand their global reach,

“Together with Amazon, we strive to provide Malaysian SMEs with the necessary tools, knowledge and support to succeed in today’s competitive global market,” he added.

Anand Palit, director of Amazon Global Selling in Southeast Asia, said they are excited to strengthen their partnership with MATRADE to enable Malaysian SMEs to leverage Amazon’s global reach.

He said they are seeing increasing interest from Malaysian sellers in selling overseas through Amazon.

“In fact, the number of new Malaysian sellers selling their products abroad through Amazon Global Selling almost doubled between January and April 2024 compared to the same period a year earlier,

“The MoU with MATRADE will provide brand owners in Malaysia with the knowledge, resources and support they need to leverage cross-border business opportunities as Amazon sellers,” he added.

It’s important to note that Amazon continues to invest in logistics, tools, services, programs and people to support Amazon seller business growth around the world.

Globally, more than 60 percent of Amazon sales come from independent sellers, most of which are small and medium-sized businesses.

Amazon has 23 stores worldwide and can ship products to customers in over 200 countries and territories.

With Amazon services like Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA), sellers can more easily scale their business, and Amazon helps them store, select, pack, and ship products while taking care of customer service and product returns.

With Supply Chain by Amazon, a comprehensive, fully automated set of supply chain services, sellers can quickly and reliably move products from manufacturing locations to customers around the world.
