Rubberized Cybertruck meets European pedestrian safety rules

The Cybertruck’s hood should also flex and there should be no protrusions to achieve a good NCAP score for pedestrian safety.

“The big wiper and the boss (of the Cybertruck) would be a danger zone,” Avery predicted.

According to transport NGOs, the modified Cybertruck was registered in the Czech Republic in July. The Czech Republic’s individual vehicle approval system was used to register it. The Czech Transport Ministry said that all vehicles in the N1 category, in which the truck was registered, have weight ratios calculated from the formulas of the 2018 European regulations. But the vehicle data provided shows that the Cybertruck does not meet the formulas when carrying four passengers.

To be able to drive legally in Europe, a Cybertruck customer should have a category C license. This is a truck license intended to drive vehicles with a gross vehicle weight (GVWR) greater than 3 .5 metric tons, or 7,716 lbs.

Norton Slovak, co-founder of Cybertruck.cz, the company that owns the imported Tesla truck, told the Guardian that he was aware of the discrepancy between the vehicle’s weight and the regulations, but that “the calculations may not fully reflect the manner in which these regulations are applied. or interpreted by the Czech authorities.

The Czech Ministry of Transport did not consider this discrepancy as a problem because the registration was “an individual approval of a vehicle of national scope only on the territory of the Czech Republic” and not a type approval for the EU in its entirety.

However, the truck, which the owners rent for advertising campaigns, has already been driven to other EU member states, including Slovakia, where in an Instagram post the company can be seen testing the “Mode Wade” on the Cybertruck in a lake near Bratislava. Things don’t go as planned and the electric all-terrain vehicle gets stuck in the water, forcing passersby to help get it out and place boards under the wheels.

Tesla, Norton Slovak, and the Czech Republic’s Ministry of Transport were all contacted for this piece, but none responded.

In their open letter, the transport NGOs say that if the European Commission does not act, the importation of this unique rubber-edged Cybertruck could lead to the “mass importation of Cybertrucks into Europe”, which they say , would prove to be a danger. to pedestrians, cyclists and motorists who are not in similarly armored motor vehicles. Euro NCAP seems to agree with this conclusion.
