Historic Environment Scotland (HES) has announced the appointment of a new chief executive.

The public body will be led by Katerina Brown, who joined HES from the National Trust for Scotland, where she is currently chief operating officer.

Brown will replace Alex Paterson, who left Historic Environment Scotland in March. Craig Mearns, chief operating officer, currently serves as interim CEO.

Brown’s career start date has not yet been confirmed.

HES said Brown’s role would focus on contributing to Scotland’s economy; education and skills development; net zero targets and the wider cultural landscape. He will report to the HES Board and will also be a designated officer accountable to the Scottish Government.

“I feel truly privileged and honored to lead Historic Environment Scotland,” Brown said. “My experience in the public, private and charitable sectors has provided me with a comprehensive understanding of how to run organizations for the benefit of all.”

Dr Hugh Hall, chairman of Historic Environment Scotland, said: “(Brown’s) experience in the heritage sector and her achievements in business make her an exceptional candidate for this position.

“Katerina brings a wealth of experience and knowledge and will play a leading role in delivering Scotland’s ambitious heritage strategy, which has a significant impact on many aspects of people’s lives.
