Guwahati, Jun 14 (PTI) Over 650 electronic gadgets were displayed at the Guwahati police station office on Friday, where people sought help in the hope of finding their phones, computers and other stolen or missing items.

The gadgets were put on display as part of an initiative to find the owners of electronic devices.

“Lost found! Tomorrow, Guwahati police will present 650 mobile phones and 16 laptops. These were recovered from the thieves and were lying in various police stations in the city due to inability to trace the real owners,” Guwahati police wrote on Thursday.

Director General of Police GP Singh said those presenting property documents were provided with the gadgets on the spot.

If someone does not have the documents at hand and later goes to the police station to obtain ID, they can collect the gadgets there, he added.

Singh also urged people to share information online about stolen or lost gadgets with the Telecom Department’s Central Equipment Identification Register (CEIR).

“Apart from filing a police complaint, people should also share information with CEIR. This way, whenever the location of a gadget is detected, the local police station will be informed and will be able to attempt to recover it,” he said.

As people thronged the commissioner’s office since morning, many of them found their missing devices while others returned empty-handed.

“I came to look for my daughter’s phone. She lost it on the bus on her way to college. We managed to find it among the items on display,” the woman said.

A youth from Sonapur area was not so lucky as he could not trace his phone.

“Maybe I can do it another time,” he said.

The DGP added that the police were focusing on controlling street crimes, especially in Guwahati and other urban areas.

“A special campaign was held in Guwahati in the last 10 days and the results were positive. I urge the local police to pursue this case,” Singh said.
