Last election: Sunak questioned in poll over ‘nightmare’ – as Tories pursue ‘risky’ strategy | Political news

Lord Heseltine says the Tories have done ‘remarkable’ things but people want ‘change’

First on Politics center show is a former deputy prime minister Lord Heseltyn.

When asked how he thinks the Conservative election campaign is going, he first states that the party has presided over “an extremely difficult period in economic history.”

He says the Tories have done “very extraordinary and impressive things” but admits people are now feeling “frustrated” and want “change”.

“The real judgment you have to make in this election is what do you mean by change?” He says.

Lord Heseltine says “the issue at the heart of the election” is “people”.

He points to Nigel Farage as someone he believes is “ready to exploit people’s anxiety towards anyone who is different.”

“You can evoke all sorts of terrible emotions… Nigel Farage is a master of this in the past. The only consequence of what he is doing will be a larger Labor majority,” he says.

Tories ‘cannot spread racism and nationalism’

Lord Heseltine says he would be “appalled” if Farage were welcomed into the Conservative Party.

He says that if the Tories lose the election, their “return to power will be led from the centre”.

“It certainly won’t happen by developing the most basic human instincts of racism and nationalism,” he says.

Asked if he feels devastated by what has happened to the party, Lord Heseltine replies that after decades of service he cannot help but feel “sad”.

“This is not the end of the Conservative Party, they will come back,” he says.
