The government will accelerate the rollout of net zero carbon programs | Times of new straits

PUTRAJAYA: The government has agreed to accelerate the implementation of the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP), National Energy Transition Action Plan (NETR) and Hydrogen Economy and Technology Action Plan (HETR) to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said new policies such as the National Climate Change Act (RUUPIN) will also be accelerated to achieve this goal.

He said the decision was taken yesterday at the fifth meeting of the National Climate Action Council (MTPIN), chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“The meeting also agreed to establish a National Decarbonization Committee that will monitor the implementation of the action plan to achieve the goal,” he said in a statement today.

Nik Nazmi said he presented three papers to MTPIN, the main points discussed being on the proposed setting of a 2050 net greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions target for the country based on the outcome of the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) Development Direction and Roadmap. . and the Long-Term Low-Emission Development Strategy (LT-LEDS).

MTPIN also agreed to endorse the National Climate Policy 2.0 as a complement to other initiatives such as RUUPIN, the National Adaptation Plan and the National Emissions Market Policy.

To ensure Malaysia’s active participation in international conferences, Nik Nazmi also presented the Malaysia Pavilion Development Plan at the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan and COP-30 in Brazil in 2025.

“At the meeting, Bank Negara Malaysia and the Securities Commission presented the financial sector’s response to climate change under the leadership of the Joint Committee on Climate Change (JC3).

“This initiative is a manifestation of the government’s comprehensive approach to the issue of climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the country’s resilience to the effects of climate change and encouraging the transition towards more sustainable and low-emission development,” he said.

During the meeting, Nik Nazmi also shared the results of his courtesy call to Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, General Phatcharavat Wongsuwan, during his brief working visit to Bangkok on June 12 last year.

The Thai government expressed its support to Malaysia for the ASEAN chairmanship in 2025 and agreed to cooperate to exchange expertise on the carbon market mechanism, he said.
