Fiji’s National Disaster Management Office is calling on the general public to be vigilant as a heavy rain alert has been issued.

This is specifically for those residing in the sea islands of the Yasawa and Mamanuca groups, Viti Levu, Kadavu and neighboring smaller islands, Moala and the Southern Lau group.

The NDMO calls on all stakeholders to take necessary precautionary measures to ensure their safety in the face of expected localized flooding in sensitive communities, businesses and low-lying areas.

The NDMO is urging motorists to use caution as heavy rain will cause reduced visibility on our roads.

Localized flooding of secondary roads, Irish Crossing and bridges is also expected.

Parents are also encouraged to ensure their children are supervised at all times and kept away from flooded swimming or walking through flooded areas.

Members of the public residing in flood-prone communities in the mentioned areas are advised to be on alert and take necessary precautionary measures when necessary.

The NDMO reiterates that the safety of every individual is always of paramount importance, hence the need for the general public to strictly adhere to the advisories issued by the relevant authorities.

You can contact the Fiji Police or the National Fire Authority if you need assistance moving to higher ground.

The Fiji NDM is liaising closely with the Fiji Meteorological Service to monitor the current weather situation and will issue advisories accordingly.
