The new decrees contribute to improving regulations against IUU fishing

According to the Fisheries Directorate, the Prime Minister recently issued a number of regulations detailing implementing measures for the Fisheries Act, as well as regulating sanctions for administrative violations in the field of fisheries. The decrees constitute an additional attempt to combat IUU fishing in Vietnam.

Regarding the monitoring of fishing boats, Decree No. 37 clarifies the responsibilities of central and local agencies in the management and use of the vessel monitoring system, as well as the responsibilities of vessel monitoring system providers.

The decree includes an additional regulation regarding observers on Vietnamese fishing vessels operating in Vietnam’s territorial waters in order to create a legal framework to maintain and promote seafood exports from Vietnam to the US.

Adapts and supplements a number of regulations on the control of foreign vessel activities in the operation and transportation of aquatic products originating from Vietnamese ports and on the control of seafood and aquatic products imported into Vietnam.

Meanwhile, Decree No. 38 increases the penalty period for administrative violations in the fisheries sector to two years, increases penalties in the event of repeated violations, and strengthens the powers of forest guards to impose penalties for violations of regulations on the protection of water resources in national parks and protected areas./.
