Driving a charge of clean energy

Construction has begun on the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT), which is expected to become the nation’s largest offshore wind port and mark a milestone in New York’s transition to clean energy. Led by Governor Kathy Hochul, Mayor Eric Adams and Equinor Wind U.S. President Molly Morris, this project is expected to move the state toward the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) goal of developing 9,000 megawatts of offshore wind capacity to 2035

This initiative is expected to create more than 1,000 construction jobs, breathing new life into the historic SBMT, a 73-acre site that is intended to serve as a state-of-the-art offshore wind facility. It will also serve as the operations and maintenance center for the Empire Wind 1 project, which aims to bring 810 megawatts of renewable energy to New York City, enough to power nearly 500,000 homes in Brooklyn.

New York’s pledge to reduce its carbon footprint

In addition to creating jobs, the SBMT project highlights New York’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and pursuing ambitious climate goals. Mayor Adams emphasized the importance of this effort to the city’s goals of achieving 100% clean electricity by 2040 and carbon neutrality by 2050. With the recent acquisition of the Brooklyn Marine Terminal in Red Hook, the city is well on its way to revitalize its operating waterfronts, ushering in a new era powered by green energy.

Construction of Empire Wind 1 at SBMT is expected to be completed by the end of 2026, which is consistent with the state’s vision for a sustainable future. The project not only represents progress toward renewable energy goals, but also represents a collaborative effort between government, industry and local communities to realize the potential of offshore wind in New York. Through strategic partnerships and investments, New York is paving the way for a cleaner, greener future while driving economic growth and job creation in the renewable energy sector.
