ALL fathers should have the right to paid paternity leave in the public and private sectors, opposition leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar said in her Father’s Day message.

Father’s Day is celebrated on June 16 this year.

Persad-Bissessar, in a June 15 press release, said today’s fathers face many challenges – at home, at work and sometimes from the legal system – that negatively impact their ability to co-parent.

“Today reminds us that fathers are essential to ensuring the strength and stability of our families as protectors, co-founders, role models and mentors.”

Fathers, she said, “play a critical role in raising productive citizens and building strong, stable communities.”

She thanked her father, Lilraj Persad, and husband, Dr. Gregory Bissessar, for providing her with “invaluable support and guidance to me and my family throughout her life.”

Persad-Bissessar said it’s important to be aware that being a father is not an easy task, especially in today’s society where they face various challenges “such as economic pressures, work-life balance and social expectations that can cause burdens that impact their ability to be fully present in their children’s lives.

“Single fathers sometimes unfairly face daunting legal and other challenges when trying to co-parent their children with ex-partners, often negatively impacting their parental rights and ultimately the well-being of their children.”

She said she praised all fathers who “despite facing such difficult trials, still have the strength and willpower to overcome the challenges and work hard to provide financial support and love and care for their children.”

“I urge them to persevere, knowing that one day their children will remember all they have done and will become better people because of their sacrifices and efforts.”

In addition to her call for paid paternity leave, she has advocated for state programs and policies to address issues affecting fathers.

“I call on everyone to commit to building a society that truly empowers and supports fathers, providing them with the right opportunities and resources to be the best parents they can be.”
