Tesla is under investigation after a South Korean regulator found it had exaggerated vehicle mileage claims, including the Model 3 report:

  • According to media reports, Elon Musk’s Tesla is being investigated by the South Korean antitrust authority.

  • The regulator says Tesla exaggerated the mileage of some vehicles, an official told Reuters.

  • KFTC says freezing temperatures can reduce the range of an electric car.

South Korea is investigating Tesla after the country’s antitrust watchdog found that the automaker’s ads overstated the mileage of some of its electric vehicles, Reuters reported on Tuesday.

An official with the Korea Fair Trade Commission told Reuters that the agency was investigating carmaker Elon Musk over allegations that he overstated battery efficiency in some models.

“We plan to hold a meeting to decide on the level of sanctions against the carmaker,” a KFTC official told Reuters.

According to Reuters, local news agency Yonhap first reported that the KFTC had sent Tesla a review report on battery claims in ads that the regulator said violated the Fair Labeling and Advertising Act. The vehicles cited included the automaker’s Model 3.

According to the company’s South Korean website, the Model 3 can travel up to 528 kilometers (328 miles) on a single charge.

However, the KFTC found that driving range decreases when temperatures drop below freezing, Reuters reports.

Tesla and KFTC did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

According to Consumer Reports, cold weather can reduce the range of an electric vehicle’s batteries by about 20%. Freezing temperatures slow chemical reactions in battery cells, which means the vehicle must use more energy to maintain battery temperature, Insider previously reported.
