The member representing Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Chief Nkemkanma Kama, has said that the main problem with the implementation of some policies by the current government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is lack of time.

Speaking to journalists in Abakaliki, Kama said most policies were necessary for the country to move forward, but stressed the importance of taking into account the feelings of citizens.

He added that most of the suffering currently prevailing in the country could have been prevented if proper steps had been taken before implementation.

He said: “For example, an amendment to the national anthem – is that what the country needs right now? During the debate, some of us asked whether citizens now wanted a change to the national anthem or a robust economy.

“One of the greatest things the government did was withdraw the subsidy, because it’s actually a monster, but I have a problem with its implementation. First, I thought there should be some sensitization; procedure is exactly where I have a problem.

“I support the abolition of fuel subsidies. I thought (former President Muhammadu) Buhari would have done it under his regime; we thought it was done a long time ago. By now the whole thing would have died down and the effects would have worn off, but unfortunately he didn’t.

“The president should have planned for the removal and its consequences, but we removed it before planning for the consequences. This created a vacuum because it is a big vacuum; we started with Z instead of AZ.

“Other policies are being implemented, such as changing the national anthem, and my problem with some of these things, as I always say, is sometimes the lack of time. For example, we haven’t finished dealing with the impact of removing fuel subsidies, and now electricity is a no-go area for anyone, and then there’s the issue of tariffs.

“Maybe it’s the right decision, but timing again is very important. This is a serious problem with the implementation of certain policies. These are the things we need to do to keep the country moving forward, but you should also consider the feelings of the people. There should be stabilization; You can’t add fuel to a burning fire.

“Honestly, I wouldn’t say that much has been achieved. We drilled in the municipalities that make up the federal constituencies of Ohaozara, Onicha and Ivo. We had a health care program that covered 16,500 people. Our Christmas palliative was out of town as we did so much for communities around the world. We had a scholarship for the poor; we paid school fees and medical care.

“We donated agricultural products to 400 women. So we did a lot; our expectations for our people have simply not been met, but we believe that by God’s grace much will happen as we move forward. As I always say, very soon the federal constituencies of Ohaozara, Onicha and Ivo will become construction sites based on the HIPE program with which we are working.

“Health, infrastructure, fighting poverty and education. In all these areas, we strive to keep our people happy, even while the scholarship program is ongoing. So we have done a lot for our people and we will continue to do what we can.”
