Strong offshore wind growth in 2023 as industry charts course for a record decade: GWEC, ET EnergyWorld

New Delhi: According to a study by the Global Wind Energy Council, the wind industry installed 10.8 GW of new offshore wind capacity in 2023, bringing the total global capacity to 75.2 GW, an increase of 24% compared with the previous year.

She added that this rate of growth is expected to continue until 2030 if current policy momentum continues.

“We anticipate that 410 GW of new offshore wind capacity will be installed over the next 10 years, bringing the growth of offshore wind energy in line with global goals of installing 380 GW by 2030.” – noted GWEC.

It said most of the capacity would be available by the turn of the decade, with two-thirds installed between 2029 and 2033.

“This projected growth will be driven by the emergence of the next wave of offshore wind markets such as Australia, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brazil, Colombia, Ireland, India and Poland,” reads the report titled “Global Growth Framework for Offshore Wind”.

According to Ben Backwell, CEO of GWEC, the installation of almost 11 GW of offshore wind energy represents the beginning of a new wave of offshore wind development.

“Policy progress – particularly in Asia-Pacific and the Americas – has put us on course to regularly install record capacity each year and exceed the Global Offshore Wind Alliance’s 380 GW capacity target. This means that offshore wind is on track to achieve the triple target set at COP28 in Dubai,” said Backwell.

India has over 70 GW of offshore wind potential that the central government wants to tap, and has already issued an initial tender for seabed leasing this decade.

In February this year, India’s Solar Energy Corporation submitted a selection application for the allocation of seabed leasing rights for 4,000 MW offshore wind projects. According to the report, it is likely that a tender related to financing the profitability gap will be announced this year.
