Buckleys Road: Approval for 65MW solar project in New Zealand

Ethical Power, in partnership with KeaX Limited, has obtained planning permission for the Buckleys Road solar project in the Selwyn district of New Zealand. The 65 MW project covers an area of 104 hectares and is expected to generate 100 GWh of energy.
The facility includes 140,000 single-axis trackers and 13 inverters, as well as a nearby battery energy storage system (BESS). This development aims to strengthen the local energy infrastructure and improve the stability of the energy network. In addition to solar energy, more and more investors are using New Zealand’s natural assets to develop renewable energy sources, in particular wind energy, but also green hydrogen.

Partnerships and local cooperation

Nick Keeler, National Director for Ethical Energy Development New Zealand, highlights the strategic importance of the project: “Buckleys Road will be New Zealand’s premier solar project. We are delighted with the positive decision of the Management Board and can’t wait for the project to become operational.”
Campbell McMath, director of KeaX Limited, adds that local government support is essential for renewable energy projects as it helps diversify land use and provides a stable source of income for local farmers.

Economic benefits and growth opportunities

The development site, adjacent to the 66 kV Brookside substation, is ideally located to maximize power grid efficiency. The proximity to Christchurch, a major demand center, reinforces the strategic importance of this investment.
This project is consistent with New Zealand’s national goals to increase renewable energy production. The 100GWh Buckleys Road Solar Farm will make a significant contribution to meeting growing energy demand, while also providing economic opportunities for the region.

Impact and prospects for the energy industry

The Buckleys Road project is a major milestone for Ethical Power and KeaX Limited, demonstrating the feasibility of large-scale solar projects in New Zealand. Combining Ethical Power’s international experience with KeaX’s local expertise, this project highlights the power of strategic partnerships in driving energy development.
Once approval is granted, construction work will begin shortly, marking a significant step forward for New Zealand’s energy industry. This project could serve as a model for future initiatives, attracting investment and strengthening the country’s energy sector.
