Press release:

Press release from Vestas Northern and Central Europe
Hamburg, June 17, 2024

Vestas has obtained a conditional contract for the supply of 112 V236-15.0 MW wind turbines for the Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind farm projects of Vattenfall and BASF, as already announced in Vestas’ announcement No. 10/2024 of June 13, 2024. Scope of the contract includes, among others: in addition, a 5-year service and warranty contract, followed by an operational support contract for up to 30 years.

Companies also emphasize their ambitions to reduce CO2e emissions throughout the value chain. The upper sections of 56 of the 112 towers will be made of low-carbon steel, which will account for 24% of the weight of the heavy steel plates used at the wind farm site and will lead to a 16% reduction in the total carbon footprint of the towers.

Low carbon steel is produced from 100% steel scrap melted in an electric arc furnace powered by 100% wind energy, reducing the carbon footprint by 66% compared to heavy steel plates produced by conventional steelmaking methods.

Nils de Baar, President of Vestas for Northern and Central Europe, says: “We are pleased to have signed this conditional contract for the supply of our state-of-the-art V236-15.0 MW offshore wind turbine for the Nordlicht projects. Vattenfall, BASF and Vestas share the ambition to rapidly develop wind projects and decarbonize the energy market in Europe, and Nordlicht will play a key role in achieving Germany’s energy transition goals. Vattenfall and BASF have extensive experience in offshore wind projects and we look forward to implementing this project together with our partners.”

Catrin Jung, Director of Offshore Wind at Vattenfall, comments: “Wind energy is an essential cornerstone on the path to freedom from fossil fuels that moves society forward. Thanks to Vestas, we now have a partner in our projects, Nordlicht, with whom we share the same values in sustainable energy solutions. The wind turbine supply and service agreements are an important milestone for us and we look forward to continuing our cooperation with Vestas as one of the leading wind turbine manufacturers.”

Horatio Evers, Managing Director at BASF Renewable Energy GmbH, adds: “Renewable energies play a key role in our efforts to achieve net zero CO2 emissions2 emissions as quickly as possible. This agreement represents another important milestone for the Nordlicht 1 and 2 offshore wind projects and demonstrates our clear commitment to the European wind energy supply chain. Sustainability is an integral part of our strategy and I am pleased that by using low-carbon steel we are also showing that sustainable products are the future.

The Nordlicht wind farm site is located 85 kilometers north of the island of Borkum in the German North Sea and consists of two separate sites: Nordlicht 1 and Nordlicht 2. Once fully operational, electricity production is expected to be approximately 6 terawatt hours (TWh). per year, which corresponds to the electricity consumption of 1.6 million German households.

Construction of Nordlicht 1 and 2 is scheduled to start in 2026. According to the current planning status, the wind turbines are to be installed in 2027 (Nordlicht 1) and 2028 (Nordlicht 2). The wind farms are expected to reach full operational capacity in 2028.

If and when the agreement with Vattenfall and BASF translates into binding and unconditional orders for Vestas, the company will disclose them in accordance with its disclosure policy.
