GitLab announces expanded integrations with Google Cloud

GitLab, a DevSecOps platform, announced the expansion of its integrations with Google Cloud. This extension helps developers work more efficiently and productively. While they initially announced the partnership in 2023, this is their first wave of integrations. With a user base of more than 30 million worldwide, the company is an increasingly renowned DevSecOps platform that aims to accelerate software innovation, increase operational efficiency and reduce security risks through a set of software development tools.

Aiming at improving development productivity

The collaboration plans to streamline the authentication process and automate continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) workflows. Essentially, GitLab and Google Cloud aim to simplify the management of developer access to software and automate testing and delivery of updates. By integrating GitLab’s DevSecOps capabilities with Google Cloud’s Identity Access Management services, Workload Identity Federation, Artifact Registry, and Compute Engine, mutual customers can theoretically expect a more consistent development experience.

Gabe Monroy, vice president of developer experience at Google Cloud, says giving developers full visibility into the software delivery process will increase productivity. He explains that the company “offers developers the choice, opportunity and security to work effectively and productively at every stage of the software lifecycle.” Additionally, he believes that “the wider availability of integrations between Google Cloud and GitLab provides developers with greater opportunities in each of these critical areas.”

Future potential?

Google Cloud has established partnerships with industry players such as Salesforce, SAP, Cisco, VMware and Informatica, which continue to thrive and are widely recognized as successful collaborations. In the future, integration could enhance DevSecOps practices, offering organizations greater flexibility, security, and opportunities for innovation.
