Google is expanding Gemini in Google News to more devices and launching the app in India

Google today announced several improvements to Gemini, as well as expanding the app to one more country: India. The search engine giant highlighted the importance of this market, where Gemini had a prolific first year as many people across the country used AI in various ways.

In addition to the Gemini app launch in India, Google has removed the Gemini device requirements for Google News. Until recently, the ability to chat with Gemini in Google Messages was limited to certain Pixel and Samsung devices, such as the Pixel 6 (or later), Pixel Fold, Samsung Galaxy S22 (or later), as well as the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip and Z Series.

Google now says it’s rolling out Gemini in Google News in English on select devices, including all Android devices with 6GB RAM or more. Of course, your device must also meet other criteria, such as having the latest version of Google News installed, a personal Google account, be over 18 years of age, and have RCS chats turned on.

Here’s how to start a chat with Gemini on Google News

  • On your Android phone, open Google News.
  • Tap chat with Gemini or tap Start Gemini Chat.
  • For the first time, follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Enter your question or suggestion.
  • When you first talk to Gemini, you can browse through different conversations. Just tap the suggestion above the message box.
  • Optionally, to add a photo to the prompt, tap Show media attachment screen.
  • Click Send message.

You can also delete the entire Gemini chat in Google News or use “Your activity in Gemini applications” to remove specific prompts from Gemini chat.

In related news, Google has announced that the top-of-the-range Gemini 1.5 Pro model will be added to Gemini Advanced in nine Indian languages: Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu.

The Gemini app is now available in India and supports English and the nine Indian languages mentioned above. Please note that if you want to access Gemini on Android, you will need to download the app or opt-in via Google Assistant. Gemini Access for iOS users will be made available directly from Google apps in the next few weeks, the search giant says.
