TL;DR

  • A new Google wireless device has been reported to the FCC.
  • All we know is that it supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 60 GHz radio.
  • This is believed to be a Nest thermostat, but it could also be a smart speaker or display.

It seems like it’s high time for Google’s Nest Thermostat to be updated, as its last version was released in 2020. Needless to say, it has been a somewhat ignored product in the Google Nest product lineup. However, you could argue that there isn’t much to change about the thermostat. Regardless, the new FCC filing has raised suspicions about a possible upcoming Nest thermostat.

Unfortunately, the FCC reports don’t tell us much. We only know that it is a “wireless device” marked with the GJQ8U model, equipped with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a 60 GHz RF radio. Of course, almost all smart devices today have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. What makes everyone suspect that this might be a Nest thermostat is its 60 GHz radio frequency support, which is oddly similar to the Soli radar found in the latest Nest thermostat.

In the current version, this Soli radar detects people approaching the device. In the case of the Nest Thermostat, this allows the device to know when you’re approaching it and intuitively turn on the display so you can see and control it. Such small functions make using the device in a smart home a pure pleasure.

That said, there’s also a chance it could be a Nest Hub or speaker. How 9to5Google However, he mentions that it makes more sense for it to be a thermostat, since the filing lacks information about other sensors and documentation typically found in speakers and displays.

Nothing is certain until it’s announced, and we don’t have much to say here. How many of you think a new thermostat would be good? Are you happy with your current one?
