Enggartiasto Lukita calls for the sustainable development of the rattan sector in Cirebon

Cirebon. Enggartiasto Lukita, former Minister of Trade of Indonesia (2016–2019) and Executive Chairman of B-Universe, actively advocates for the protection and development of the rattan handicraft industry in Cirebon.

Cirebon Regency in West Java is known as a major center for the rattan furniture industry, serving both domestic and international markets.

During his visit to a hotel in Cirebon, West Java last weekend for an exhibition of rattan artisans and processing industries, Enggar emphasized the importance of maintaining and developing this traditional industry.

The rattan crafts industry faced challenges when artisans were asked to stop exporting raw rattan, a ban set out in the Minister of Trade Regulation No. 22 of 2023 on goods prohibited for export.

“If raw materials are exported, it becomes a problem. That’s why the government said earlier that local needs should be met first,” Enggar said on Saturday.

Despite lower local demand, Enggar noted that Cirebon’s rattan products are in high demand in the international market.

“Foreign countries love natural materials. We are dealing with an alternative to synthetic rattan, but in some countries there is a strong preference for natural rattan, which leads to strong international demand,” he explained.

Additionally, Enggar emphasized that comfort is a key aspect to maintain when it comes to rattan products.

“Innovation in design should not be underestimated, because there are many solutions and forms attractive to modern consumers,” he said.

Enggar also emphasized that the evolution of the design should take into account the age of the user. Futuristic designs may not be suitable for older users.

“For example, some heights may not be attractive to older people. However, design trends must be adapted to market needs. I hope that the rattan industry will remain vibrant and continue to develop,” he added.

Stefani Setiawan, co-founder of Tukulokal, mentioned that her company is focused on developing the rattan industry. As a retailer, Tukulokal aims to raise public awareness of rattan.

“Rattan has many advantages, and Cirebon is its main source because many artisans using raw materials from Sulawesi and Sumatra are based here,” Stefani said.

Tukulokal is distinguished by the ability to adapt designs to customer preferences, which makes its products unique compared to others available on the market.

“We have our own designer. We export our products, but locally we focus on restaurants, cafes and anyone interested in cooperating with us,” she concluded.
