Fact checking

The video circulating on social media has been edited/cropped to misrepresent Sunil Hadunnethhi’s statements. The original comments were made five months ago during an interview with Neth FM.

Hadunneththi was then discussing the government’s decision to increase the VAT percentage. He explained that Sri Lanka is facing a revenue and expenditure problem and as a result, domestic expenditure exceeds revenue.

He said that if the government cannot control spending, it has three options to increase revenues: privatize state-owned enterprises, print more money or take back money deposited by the public. These comments examined potential actions by the current government in response to the economic crisis, rather than proposals for future nuclear policy.

Moreover, Handunetti also points out that in times of economic crisis such as the one the nation is currently facing, members of the government will have to sacrifice some or all of the unnecessary expenses such as security expenses, living expenses, etc., and the National Government The People’s Forces will carry out such a program in such situations.

Moreover, even the NPP has not yet presented a detailed policy framework defining its economic strategies, which has attracted criticism. The SJB economic committee challenged the nuclear power plant to a debate on economic policy. However, the NPP has consistently responded that the discussion should first take place between the leaders of both parties.

Application:

The video is misleading. Sunil Hadunneththi’s comments were about potential measures taken by the current government to address the economic problems, according to the NPP, and not about the NPP’s final plans for the future. Before drawing conclusions, it is necessary to check the context of political statements.
