Asmongold’s ban on Twitch is only temporary after ‘racist’ Palestinian remarks

Asmongold still from the Twitch stream

Asmongold apologized, sort of (Twitch)

Twitch streamer Asmongold has had one of his channels banned after describing Palestinians as “terrible people” with an “inferior culture.”

Zack Hoyt, the popular streamer better known as Asmongold, has been temporarily banned from Twitch after making racist comments.

The World Of Warcraft streamer discussed the conflict in Gaza, which has seen more than 40,000 Palestinians killed, during his show on Monday. Following his comments, excerpts of the stream were shared on social media and widely criticized.

“If you want to think of genocide as the systematic killing of a group of people, genocide is currently enshrined in sharia law,” Hoyt said. “So no, I’m not going to cry on a fucking river when people who have genocide written into their laws are being genocided. I don’t care. They are terrible people. It’s not even a question. It’s crazy that people don’t see it that way.

He added: “They (the Palestinians) would do the same thing. And how many did they kill? As much as they can. They are not capable of killing as many people as Israel because they do not have as many bombs and as many weapons. But if they did, they would do the same thing… These people are not your allies.

“They are not the same as us. They come from an inferior culture that is horrible, that kills people for their identity, and that is directly antithetical to everything Western values stand for, and it is an inferior culture in every way. It’s that simple.

Following the comments and subsequent backlash on social media, Twitch temporarily banned Hoyt’s main Zackrawrr channel. At the time of writing, when trying to access the channel page, a message says: “This channel is temporarily unavailable due to a violation of Twitch’s Community Guidelines or Terms of Service.”

Hoyt’s other Twitch channel, titled Asmongold, was not affected, but he has not streamed there for the past two years.

As Twitch confirmed (via IGN), his comments violated the platform’s hateful conduct policy, which “does not permit behavior motivated by hatred, bias, or intolerance, including behavior that promotes or encourage discrimination, disparagement, harassment or violence based on the following protected characteristics: race, ethnicity, color, caste, national origin, immigration status, religion, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, serious health condition and veteran status.

It is unclear how long the Zackrawrr channel will be offline. GameCentral has reached out to Twitch for clarification.

Hoyt has since attempted to apologize for the comments on Twitter following the ban. “Come to think of it, I was way too much of an asshole about the history of Palestine,” he wrote.

‘My fault. Of course, no one deserves to have their life destroyed, even if they do things or have opinions that I find regressive. You deserve more than me saying stupid shit like that, I’ll do better.

But his tone does not convince everyone. “My bad” shows how you clearly have empathy,” one user wrote in response. Another added: “No one accepts this weak apology.”

This isn’t the first time Hoyt has sparked controversy. Earlier this year, he came under fire after dismissing the winner of a streaming award as a “diversity pick”, while also being criticized for saying “artists don’t have a importance”.
