Artificial intelligence won’t put software engineers out of work: Bill Gates to Nikhil Kamath

Bill Gates said such concerns are hysterical because software developers and their talents will always be in demand.

According to Bill Gates, artificial intelligence has both potential advantages and disadvantages, but programmers may still be needed in the future. During a conversation with Nikhil Kamath of Zerodha, co-founder of Microsoft, he said that artificial intelligence (AI) has huge potential in fields such as education and healthcare, where its progress is already increasing productivity.

He said: “The amazing thing about this technology is that we know it can help in key areas and we know it can create educational teachers. We have seen several projects in India and the US that have delivered great results. The potential would be amazing if we knew that all it did was make jobs more productive.”

Addressing the question of whether artificial intelligence will eliminate the need for software engineers, Bill Gates said that such concerns are hysterical because software developers and their talents will always be in demand. He said, “We still need these software engineers because we’re not going to stop needing them.”

But will there come a time when artificial intelligence can potentially replace all jobs? Bill Gates said that if “it reaches the point of total replacement, it will be a world of excess, which may be great for the elderly and disabled, but it may be the point at which the very organizing principles of society and what we value” may begin to change and be dismantled.

Bill Gates calmed fears by stating that this would not happen for at least another 20 years after issuing the warning.

He jokingly replied, “I’m not sure about that, though.”
