Police are investigating a device that exploded in Worcester

WORCESTER – Worcester police are investigating a small explosion that occurred Wednesday near 185 Madison St. in the Canal District.

A police spokesman said that officers who arrived at the scene found a fire in the middle of the street. Police said several fireworks and a gas canister were also discovered.

According to the police, the device was detonated by units arriving at the scene and did not cause a fire.

According to police, remains of a similar explosive device were also discovered on Harrison Street.

Interstate 290 was closed for a very short time during the incident. According to police, there were no injuries.

According to Trooper Brandon Doherty of the Massachusetts State Police media relations office, at 8:37 a.m. the Worcester Fire Department requested assistance from Massachusetts State Police bomb technicians working in the state fire marshal’s office.

The scene was secured and technicians and investigators called the Southbridge Street Fire Department, Doherty said.

Worcester police and the Massachusetts State Police bomb squad are investigating.
