The Taliban have reportedly imposed a ban on certain media outlets from broadcasting “images of living beings” in Afghanistan.

An Afghan official confirmed the news to the Associated Press on Tuesday. The activist group, through its Ministry of Vices and Virtue, is currently enforcing this rule in some provinces, and it is unclear when or if it will apply to all media in the country, including foreign media. .

The new rule reflects laws announced by the Ministry of Vice and Virtue in August, which also banned women’s voices and naked faces. The legislation marks the first declaration of such rules in Afghanistan since the Taliban took power after the US withdrawal.

Article 17 of the law, approved by Supreme Leader Hibatullah Akhundzada, prohibits the publication of any images depicting living beings.

Ministry of Vice and Virtue spokesperson Saif ul Islam Khyber confirmed that media in the Afghan provinces of Maidan Wardak, Kandahar and Takhar have been advised not to show images of anything having a soul.

The director of the Aghan Independent Journalists’ Union, Hujjatullah Mujadidi, reported that the ministry had directly asked state media not to broadcast such images. It was then extended to all provincial media.

“Last night, independent local media (in some provinces) also stopped broadcasting these videos and images and are instead broadcasting nature videos,” Mujadidi said.

Afghanistan is the only Muslim-majority country to apply this broadcasting rule. The extremes of the legislation announced by the Ministry of Vice and Virtue have caused international concern, particularly regarding laws relating to women.

The Ministry of Vice and Virtue deemed women’s voices too “intimate” and banned women from singing or reading aloud in public. The law also requires women to wear the veil in public.
