Tree planting search engine Ecosia launches new web browser that can produce clean energy – here’s how it works

The idea of generating clean energy and planting trees – all while sitting at your desk and working – may sound like science fiction. But the eco-friendly web browser Ecosia has made this a reality.

Ecosia was launched in 2009 as a non-profit search engine. And while it uses a traditional business model with advertising financing and affiliate stores, the company has made an extraordinary promise. She promised to donate 100% of the company’s net profits to planting trees – and she did. Since then, the Ecosia search engine has been responsible for planting over 200 million trees.

Now, with the announcement of a new web browser, the company is expanding its influence by using web browsing to generate clean energy.

“We’ll be producing 25Wh of renewable energy every day you’re viewing – that’s enough to power a light bulb for 3 hours!” the company shared in a blog announcement. “We already produce enough renewable energy to repeat all searches twice. Now we can go even further with our continued investments in solar and other clean energy projects.”

This tool is not only great for the planet, but also great for users. According to Ecosia, which is also a certified Company B, its new browser runs up to three times faster than most popular browsers thanks to a built-in, energy-saving ad blocker.

In a company statement reported by Euronews, founder Christian Kroll said the company will “give users even greater opportunities to align their digital choices with their values.”

People may be surprised to learn that Internet use generates approximately 1.1 billion tons of planet-warming gases each year, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council. The intersection of Internet use and energy generation is particularly susceptible to innovation; According to the International Energy Agency, the energy sector generates almost 75% of harmful heat-trapping air pollutants worldwide every year.

On the contrary, clean energy sources such as solar and wind energy not only reduce pollution, but are also cheaper, more accessible and healthier for both people and the planet.

With this in mind, supporting eco-friendly initiatives like Ecosia is crucial for the future.

Kroll concluded: “Enjoy this newest addition to our ecosystem, knowing that you are part of a powerful environmental movement and that we will continue to plant trees and restore biodiversity around the world, as well as invest in clean energy and other green initiatives, by using 100% our gains for the planet.”
