The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Bayero University Kano, BUK chapter at the weekend rejected the appointment of prominent Kano politician, Dr. Nasiru Gawuna, to the Governing Council of the second generation university.

KANO FOCUS reports that the chairman, prof. Ibrahim Tajo Suraj, said the process that led to the appointment of politicians to the Governing Council of the national citadel of science was contrary to the relevant provisions of law that guided such appointments.

Addressing journalists at the secretariat, Comrade Siraj explained that “I must admit that we are not satisfied with the decision of the Federal Government to appoint hard-core politicians to the Governing Council.

Prof. Siraj emphasized that “the criteria for such appointments are clearly clear as they favor the appointment of technocrats and academics to the Council.”

The Chairman argued that the dismissal of the current Council had a constitutional mandate

4 years of office and one year in office is a violation of the rule of law.

He, therefore, called on the Federal Government to reinstate Senator Udo Udoma who led the Governing Council to complete its term in the interest of rule of law

Siraj stressed that “the scenario is as if the executive governor of a state is fired after only one person is in office and you immediately assume that everything is fine, no, this is a violation of the rule of law.”

Ibrahim Tajo Suraj, earlier led (ASUU), Kano chapter of Bayero University, on Friday during a peaceful protest demanding the Federal Government to pay benefits and implement the 2009 ASUU/FG Agreement.

Prof. Ibrahim Tajo Suraj said the action was in line with the national body’s directive to all its branches to stage protests on their campuses over non-payment of their benefits by the federal government.
