Apple CEO Tim Cook Boasts Future Artificial Intelligence Plans After Beating Profits (Video)

Apple ( AAPL ) CEO Tim Cook took some time during the company’s second-quarter earnings call on Thursday to drum up excitement about the iPhone maker’s upcoming generative AI offerings.

In his remarks, Cook told the audience that the company is optimistic about the opportunities that generative AI has to offer and that it is making significant investments in the technology.

“We believe in the transformative power and promise of artificial intelligence, and we believe we have the advantages that will set us apart in this new era, including Apple’s unique combination of seamless integration of hardware, software and services; breakthrough Apple silicon with our industry-leading neural engine; and our unwavering focus on privacy,” Cook said.

Before the call, Apple reported better-than-expected earnings and revenue, although iPhone sales were down about 10% year-over-year.

In June, Apple will host its annual WWDC developer conference, which should serve as a springboard for the company’s generative AI ambitions. Analysts hope that generative artificial intelligence could spark another iPhone sales supercycle. However, so far the technology does not appear to be driving sales of competing smartphones from the likes of Samsung and Google.

Cook was relatively reserved about Apple’s generative artificial intelligence plans, dropping little tidbits here and there about the company’s investments. This is one of the first times he has spoken so strongly about how Apple will differentiate itself from its Big Tech rivals in the area of generative artificial intelligence.

Wall Street is anxiously awaiting Apple’s announcements about generative artificial intelligence. The company has not launched any generative AI products since the technology exploded in popularity in late 2022.

Meanwhile, rivals including Amazon, Google, Meta and Microsoft have introduced a range of generative AI capabilities and products, including chatbots and search engine enhancements. Specifically, Microsoft added generative AI directly to Windows 11 via Windows 11 Copilot.

If Apple’s plans for generative AI are to meet Wall Street’s expectations, they will need to provide some essential features that users won’t be able to get on their existing devices. We’ll find out what Apple is planning next month.
