Microsoft’s new line of Surface devices “leads in innovation”

Microsoft’s new line of Surface devices, including the first Studio Laptop and the second-generation Duo 2 foldable phone, show the tech company is an “innovation leader,” experts say.

On Wednesday, the US electronics giant used a virtual event to announce a new flagship laptop – the Surface Studio Laptop – with a screen that users can pull forward and adjust to a flatter angle to draw or write by hand.

Hailed by the company as “the most powerful Surface we’ve ever built,” it has a 14.4-inch PixelSense Flow display and is compatible with Microsoft’s Surface Slim Pen 2.

This was announced alongside three new versions of the company’s popular 2-in-1 hybrid computers; Surface Pro 8, Surface Go 3 and Surface Pro X.

Surface Duo 2, a dual-screen mobile device from Microsoft, was also unveiled, featuring a new triple camera system and better curved screens.

The tech giant also announced updates to improve the durability and accessibility of its products, including the Ocean Plastic Mouse, a computer mouse made from 20% recycled ocean plastics, and the new Surface Adaptive Kit – a range of stickers, labels and tags marking to make it easier for people with disabilities Find, use and open devices.

“Each new version of Windows unlocks the next generation of hardware innovations,” said Microsoft vice president of devices, Pete Kyriacou.

“And for the last decade, Surface has been at the forefront – challenging conventions, pioneering new experiences and creating entirely new device categories.

“Today, on the cusp of Windows 11, we’re unveiling the biggest update to the Surface portfolio ever.

“With PixelSense displays, new pen technology, high-end microphones and cameras, efficient silicon and a versatile form factor, new Surface devices are designed to take Windows innovation to the next level.”

Industry expert and analyst Geoff Blaber, CEO of CCS Insight, agreed that the new line of devices represents a significant step forward for the company.

“Surface is a clear example of Microsoft’s innovation leadership. “Detachable keyboards, displays, innovative hinges and all-in-one designs were pioneered by Microsoft and created new segments that others followed,” he said.

“Microsoft’s investments in hardware have played an important role in reviving the personal computer to the benefit of the entire industry.”

He continued: “The Surface portfolio has expanded significantly since the first device was released in 2012, when there was widespread skepticism about Microsoft’s return to hardware production. Almost ten years have passed and it has been confirmed.

“Microsoft currently has a popular product line that leverages a wide range of partner chipsets and device form factors, which provides broad choice and attractive pricing. This, combined with tight integration with Microsoft software and services, sets the company apart from Apple, which has been energized by the success and flexibility the M1 processor provides.

“Microsoft’s strength is increasingly in Surface hardware combined with software and services. The better it can combine these elements in equipment that covers many different segments and user requirements, the more competitive it will become.”
