FIA approves additions and changes to WEC sporting and technical regulations

Several key sporting and technical regulations for the FIA World Endurance Championship were approved today by the FIA World Motor Sport Council at its third meeting of 2024.

At the council’s third meeting of the year, the following additions and changes to the rules were confirmed for the 2025 season:

The Leader lights will be replaced by multi-color LED display panels installed on either side of the cars, offering wide viewing angles and capable of displaying a range of information. This change was made to “improve the fan experience.” The homologation period for Hypercar class cars has been extended by two years, until the end of the 2029 season. The lifespan of current generation LMP2 cars has also been extended. Their approval will last until the end of 2027. These cars will continue to be present in the European Le Mans Series, Asian Le Mans Series and IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Any driver who has driven less than 45 minutes in total during a race will not score FIA WEC Championship points – this is a reduction from the previous limit of 60 minutes. Each Hypercar manufacturer must nominate two cars to score points in the world championship.

The meeting was chaired by President Mohammed Ben Sulayem, and members of the World Council joined in person at the FIA offices in Paris and by video conference.
