Emma Hayes names USWNT team for first matches since winning Olympic gold

Trinity Rodman will miss three upcoming games for the United States women’s national soccer team as she continues to recover from a back injury.

Coach Emma Hayes announced her roster Thursday for the games against Iceland on Oct. 24 in Austin, Texas, and Oct. 27 in Nashville. The Americans will next host Argentina on October 30 in Louisville, Kentucky.

These are the United States’ first matches since winning gold at the Paris Olympics. The roster includes 18 members of the team that played in France, but also a handful of newcomers to the team.

“For me, it’s just about evolving. The Olympics are a great foundation and a great foundation for us. But that’s not an indicator of future success,” Hayes said. “We need to make sure we get the key messages across to all the players. … I feel like we already have a good understanding of our principles, we just need to evolve them to the next step.”

Hayes has called 26 players for camp, but he will field 23 for each game.

Rodman, who plays for the Washington Spirit in the National Women’s Soccer League, suffered an intense back spasm that caused her to leave the field in a wheelchair during a game against the Kansas City Current last month.

She was a substitute in the Spirit’s win last weekend against Racing Louisville, playing for the first time since her injury. She will continue her rehabilitation with the team in preparation for the NWSL playoffs.

Spirit rookie Croix Bethune, who suffered a torn meniscus that ended her season, and defender Tierna Davidson, who was injured last weekend playing for Gotham, were also missing from the team in due to injury. Forward Crystal Dunn was unavailable due to “personal commitments,” US Soccer said.

Hayes included six players in camp who could play their first matches for the United States: midfielder Hal Hershfelt, defender Emily Sams, central defender Eva Gaetino, defender Alyssa Malonson, forward Yazmeen Ryan and forward Emma Sears.

Hayes did not include players from the recent Under-20 Women’s World Cup squad that won the bronze medal at the event in Colombia last month. The United States plans to hold a “Futures Camp” during the team’s traditional training camp in January.

“As far as older players go, the door has never been closed,” Hayes said Thursday of the inclusion of veteran players who weren’t called up. “That’s why I call it a camp of the future, because there may be more senior players, more experienced players, who also have the right to participate in the camp now. And I don’t want to close the door, even in January. So a future player could be a more experienced NWSL player that I haven’t seen yet and really want to look into.

Team USA will honor veteran defender Kelley O’Hara during a halftime retirement ceremony in Nashville.

These matches are the last for the United States at home. The team will play a match against England at Wembley Stadium on November 30 and another against the Netherlands at Bingoal Stadium in The Hague on December 3.
