Consumers Energy closer to meeting clean energy goals with battery purchase agreement

JACKSON, Mich., June 24, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Consumers Energy today announced an agreement that will add 100 megawatts of battery energy storage through a partnership with Consumers Energy The power of Jupiter. The agreement represents a significant milestone towards the company’s goal of achieving 550 megawatts of storage capacity by 2040.

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) store and distribute energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar, enabling more energy to be captured and reducing the overall cost of electricity. Used in conjunction with energy efficiency improvements, demand response and grid modernization, BESS will accelerate the transition to renewable energy without sacrificing affordability or a reliable grid.

While Consumers Energy plans to build its own 75-megawatt storage facility by 2027, the facility, to be built in partnership with The power of Jupiter IN Cold waterwill add to the growing number of storage systems already in operation across the state, including Kalamazoo, Cadillac, Grand Rapids AND Standard.

Consumer Energy is Michigan largest energy supplier, providing natural gas and/or electricity to 6.8 million of the state’s 10 million residents in all 68 Lower Peninsula counties. Consumers Energy’s Clean Power Plan calls for eliminating coal as an energy source by 2025, achieving net zero carbon emissions and meeting 90 percent of customers’ energy needs through clean sources, including wind and solar.
