We shed some light on Fox Squirrel Solar in Ohio

Amazon will purchase full solar generating capacity in a project presented by Enbridge and EDF Renewables

NORTHAMPTON, MA / ACCESSWIRE / June 24, 2024 / Time to have fun and take advantage of the Ohio sun.

Enbridge, EDF Renewables’ North American project partner, and guests celebrate today in Madison County, Ohio, during a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the recently completed first phase of the Fox Squirrel Solar Power Plant.

This is one of the largest utility-scale solar investments east of the Mississippi – 1.4 million panels and 159 inverters; and peak construction, which required 650 workers to safely install 10,000 panels per day.

During the event, Amazon announced that it has entered into power purchase agreements for its full generation capacity, which will help Amazon meet its commitment to make all the electricity used in its operations 100% renewable by 2030. The company is currently on the path to achieving its goal by 2025.

As corporations increasingly engage in renewable energy, solar projects like Fox Squirrel will help Ohio realize its ongoing commitment to attracting businesses and supporting economic growth in the state.

Thomas Carbone, Enbridge’s vice president of energy business development, told the audience that Enbridge is pleased and grateful to expand its presence in the Buckeye State as we continue to expand our renewable energy business.

“Fox Squirrel plays a key role in our commitment to the energy transition and our plans to continue investing in these types of projects,” Carbone said. “We look forward to working closely with all of you as we work on Phases 2 and 3.”

In its initial phase, Fox Squirrel has the capacity to produce 150 megawatts (MW) of solar energy. Phase F Phase 2 is expected to be operational in mid-2024 and will generate up to 250 MW, while Phase 3 is expected to be operational in late 2024 and generate up to 177 MW.

The project continues a multi-year partnership between Enbridge and EDF Renewables that began 12 years ago with four wind projects in Canada. Enbridge-EDF’s growing portfolio also includes several offshore wind projects in France.

“I am very pleased with how far we have come on this journey with our partners, EDF Renewables, and with everything we have achieved together,” Carbone said.

Enbridge is firmly established in Ohio, and its operations now span every part of our renewable energy business (Fox Squirrel and the Wheelersburg Solar project), liquids pipelines (Line 17, also known as the Toledo Pipeline), natural gas transmission pipelines (Texas ) Eastern, NEXUS and Generation) and gas companies (Enbridge Gas Ohio).

Solar energy can produce electricity without emissions, waste production or water consumption. We entered the solar industry in southwestern Ontario in 2008 and continue to build our solar portfolio with several new projects – such as Fox Squirrel – that are in operation or in development.

In total, the number of homes that our solar investments can power each year exceeds 45,000, based on net generation data, which does not take into account the participation of our project partners.
