Call Of Duty Anti-Cheat Wrongly Banned Legitimate Players, But All Accounts Have Been Restored

Activision’s anti-cheat software, Ricochet, was wrongly banning legitimate players, causing a stir in the Call of Duty community as people explained how they were being penalized despite having done nothing wrong. Activision recently acknowledged this, saying that only a “small number” of legitimate players have been affected by Modern Warfare III and Warzone, and that those who have been affected have had their bans overturned.

So what happened here? Activision said players found a workaround in a Ricochet detection system for Modern Warfare III and Warzone that allowed them to target legitimate players. Essentially, people found a way to go after the people they wanted banned, even if they hadn’t done anything wrong.

All legitimate accounts affected have been restored, Activision said, adding that it would conduct a “review of our systems” to try to prevent this from happening again.

Activision has always said that it’s impossible to completely keep cheaters at bay, because intelligent and dedicated bad actors never stop their efforts to cheat and negatively affect the experience. Ricochet, through its use of artificial intelligence systems and other means, has effectively cracked down on cheating in the latest Call of Duty games, but it’s a never-ending battle.

Popular Call of Duty streamer BobbyPoff was among the legitimate players whose account was banned because of this, as people used Ricochet’s workaround to convince anti-cheat tools that he was cheating while this was not the case. BobbyPoff said he has not received a public or private apology from Activision. “Imagine getting your name drug in the mud for two weeks for something you never did and being offered no explanation. Oh wait, that was ME for the last two weeks!!!” he wrote.

Activision will announce the latest details on Ricochet updates and improvements for Black Ops 6 later today on October 18, so check back regularly for more. For more on Black Ops 6, check out the first details on the new UI and how to preload.
