Google is preparing improvements to the reliability of its Find My Device network

After several delays earlier this year, Google finally rolled out its improved Find My Device network. However, during our tests of the new Chipolo One trackers, we found the network to be somewhat unreliable. Google seems to be aware of this and is working on some improvements.

In a statement to Mishaal Rahman, a Google spokesperson said:

We are actively working to make improvements to the Find My Device network that will improve the speed and ability to locate lost items in the coming weeks. Devices continue to join the new Find My Device network and we expect the network to continue to grow, which will also help improve the ability to find lost devices. We encourage Bluetooth tag owners to change their Find My Device network settings to “Networked in all areas” to improve the network’s ability to find lost items in less trafficked areas.

If you’ve purchased one of the new Chipolo or Pebblebee trackers and noticed that the tracker’s location isn’t updating frequently, you can enable the setting mentioned above by going to “Find your devices offline” in the Find My Device section of your Security & Privacy settings. However, you shouldn’t expect drastic improvement until Google releases its promised web improvements.

If you haven’t purchased a tracker that works with Google’s updated Find My Device network, consider the new Moto Tag. It has a built-in UWB chip that can communicate with other UWB devices for precise location tracking. Despite being similarly priced, Bluetooth trackers from Chipolo and Pebblebee do not have this feature.
