WhatsApp will stop working on Apple, Samsung and more: Here is the list of phones affected

People are hanging on to their smartphones longer than ever. According to Statista, most people in the U.S. keep their devices for at least two years and seven months before upgrading, and some use their phones until they break. If you have an older phone and use WhatsApp constantly, you may need to upgrade to a newer device to continue using the app.

A report by CanalTech indicates that WhatsApp will stop updating and working on more than 35 smartphones from vendors such as Apple, Huawei, Lenovo, LG, Motorola and Samsung.

Even though brands like Huawei and LG have stopped selling phones in India, many people still use phones from these brands and are now forced to upgrade to a newer smartphone considering their intention to use WhatsApp in the future. This doesn’t just apply to WhatsApp, many apps also have similar policies, and WhatsApp makes it much easier to identify considering it has over three billion users.

The list includes very popular smartphones from the beginning of this decade, such as the Apple iPhone 6 and the first-generation iPhone SE. Similarly, users of popular Samsung phones such as the Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S3 Mini, and Galaxy S4 Mini also need to upgrade to newer models for WhatsApp to function properly.

The reason is outdated hardware and software

Smartphone manufacturers only support devices for a few years. Due to software and hardware compatibility, developers like Meta optimize their applications for newer software versions. To run WhatsApp, you’ll need a device with at least Android 5 Lollipop or iOS 12. While the report only covers mainstream smartphones, WhatsApp will likely stop working on more budget phones running Android 4 or older.
