Jury fines NFL nearly $4.8 billion in damages in antitrust case, league announces appeal

A U.S. District Court jury on Thursday ordered the NFL to pay nearly $4.8 billion in damages after ruling that the league violated antitrust laws through its “Sunday Ticket” program.

The NFL broadcast Sunday afternoon games on a premium service that required a subscription, which the lawsuit said violated antitrust laws.

According to the lawsuit, the program was sold through partners at an inflated price.

The jury on Thursday awarded $4.7 billion for the residential class and $96 million for the commercial class.

The NFL announced it will appeal the ruling.
