Shopee will adjust its services in Indonesia after violating antitrust law

Indonesia’s antitrust agency Komisi Pengawas Persaingan Usaha (KPPU) said PT Shopee International Indonesia (Shopee) and PT Nusantara Ekspres Kilat (Shopee Express) pleaded guilty to violating antitrust laws.

The admission will be included in a behaviour modification integrity package that will be signed by both parties at the next hearing.

KPPU said Shopee proposed changes to its current practices on June 20, which were approved by the committee’s board.

A few days later, on June 25, Shopee agreed to make changes to its services in Indonesia. The ‘Integrity Change Behavior Pact’ will be signed by both parties at the next hearing.

Radynal Nataprawira, head of public affairs for Shopee Indonesia, reportedly said that Shopee always strives to comply with all applicable laws and regulations in the Republic of Indonesia when conducting its business activities.

Shopee reportedly stated that it has proposed changes to its user interface to demonstrate compliance in providing the best services to users, as well as in line with the KPPU’s feedback.

Last month, the KPPU launched an investigation into e-commerce platforms Shopee Indonesia and Lazada for violating anti-competitive laws. It found that Shopee had stopped listing several delivery services it had previously used.

According to a statement by KPPU, the e-commerce platform has left customers with only two companies to choose from, namely J&T Express and Shopee Express.

This violation, according to the KPPU, had a direct impact on competition among consumers. It also found the prioritization of Shopee Express, an affiliate, to be an exclusionary practice.
