Quadient expands open locker network in Japan

Quadient has partnered with JR East Smart Logistics Co., the logistics arm of a major Japanese railway company, to integrate advanced parcel delivery and collection capabilities with JR East’s existing multi-functional locker system, Multi E-Cube, across Japan’s extensive rail network.

Multi-operator delivery

Multi E-Cube Lockers are now part of Quadient’s comprehensive and open network of nearly 7,000 locations offering multi-carrier delivery and pickup services in Japan. This initiative leverages Quadient’s intelligent locker platform to provide an efficient and user-friendly parcel pickup environment while repurposing existing locker networks. By integrating existing locker systems, Quadient significantly reduces environmental impact and costs and offers more contactless services to consumers at train stations.

“We are excited to partner with JR East Smart Logistics on this groundbreaking new approach,” said Geoffrey Godet, CEO of Quadient. “With our agile software platform, we are adding this existing network of lockers to our broader open network of lockers, allowing us to expand our network in record time in highly strategic, high-traffic areas. This partnership exemplifies our vision of an open and connected network that benefits carriers, end users and hosts, while also caring for the environment.”

Service up to 24 hours a day

E-commerce customers can now select their desired pickup location from JR East stations during the checkout process on various e-commerce platforms that offer locker delivery. Once packages are delivered to the selected location, customers receive an automatic notification with a pickup code, allowing them to safely retrieve their packages. The service operates from the first to the last train at each station, and some lockers are available 24/7.

Yasushi Ichihara, president and CEO of JR East Smart Logistics Co., explained: “We are witnessing a revolutionary change in the role of station lockers, driven by the evolving e-commerce landscape and increased consumer demands. We are expanding the functionality of our lockers beyond simple storage to include package delivery and pickup, providing more efficient and environmentally friendly delivery processes while enhancing the everyday convenience of the JR East station for our valued customers.

“We are committed to supporting collaboration with a diverse range of business partners, leveraging our expanded locker capabilities to facilitate not only the storage and delivery of goods, but also innovative services such as dry cleaning item management and after-hours item retrieval, enriching citizens’ lives and contributing to a positive future.”

Currently, 145 Multi E Cube units have been installed in key locations such as Tokyo and Shinjuku stations, with plans to deploy around 1,000 units by the end of 2026.
