Wendy’s partners with Ampion to source renewable energy for restaurants

The Wendy’s Company chain announced a partnership with Ampion Renewable Energy. This is an important step in the company’s efforts to obtain renewable energy for its restaurants.

Thanks to this initiative, 100 company-operated restaurants and 40 franchised restaurants in New York, Illinois and Massachusetts can obtain from 30% to 100% of their energy from solar sources without the need for on-site installation.

The partnership with Ampion Renewable Energy enables Wendy’s to obtain renewable energy certificates (RECs) and contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Registered restaurants will benefit from savings and support the company’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

Steven Derwoed, Wendy’s vice president of global design and construction, said: “We are excited about the opportunity this partnership offers our company and franchise restaurant operators to make it easier and more accessible to clean energy sources and ultimately deliver cost savings.

“We are making progress toward our emission reduction goals through community participation in solar and REC. This is a win-win for both the company and our franchisees.”

Wendy’s is on track to significantly reduce its carbon footprint by setting goals to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 47% and its franchisees’ Scope 3 emissions by the same percentage per restaurant by 2030, using a 2019 baseline. Sourcing energy from renewable sources is key to achieving these goals.

Wendy’s restaurants have invested in community solar energy through Ampion, equivalent to the CO₂ emissions from electricity use by 2,200 homes in a year.

With Ampion+, every kilowatt-hour will be billed, monitored and attributed to a specific restaurant via REC.

Ampion CEO and Founder Nate Owen said: “As the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions grows, community photovoltaics combined with RECs provides a solution to environmental sustainability in the corporate sector that is both achievable and affordable, while enabling companies to quantify and disclose their progress in a standardized way.

“We see more and more large companies actively seeking sustainable solutions through solar energy in communities. This partnership with Wendy’s demonstrates Ampion’s ability to support these organizations in reducing emissions and bringing more renewable energy onto the grid for local communities.”
