Free agents who got a raise thanks to their performance in 2024

In his early years with the Yankees, Severino was a top option when healthy. He’s more of a three- or four-spot starter now, but that should still net him a big payday, especially since he’s only 30 years old.

Spotrac projects his contract to be worth $56 million over four years, and that seems quite on point. As I preached in this article, newbies will likely be overpaid this winter. It wouldn’t shock me at all if a contending team gave upwards of $70 million to bolster their rotation with Severino.

That name may surprise some (see what I did there?), but Higashioka has been quietly very good this season. The veteran backstop was worth at least 1.3 WAR in each of the last three seasons, but never played more than 100 games. The Padres ultimately made him the primary catcher down the stretch and he remained steady.

His surge helped as he hit 17 home runs, seven more than his previous career high, and he continued to be a steady presence behind the dish. There may be bigger names, but I honestly don’t think there is a better all-around receiver available this winter.

His market value on Spotrac is a one-year, $1.6 million contract, but that seems far away given the lack of catching options on the free agent market. I think “Higgy” will get a two-year deal, more likely than not, to stay in San Diego, worth in the $10 million range.

One final reliever to add to the mix here is someone who finally really got the opportunity to shine this year in a crowded bullpen. Hoffman was a key part of Philadelphia’s bullpen last year, but he took on an eighth/ninth inning role this season and continued to deliver on his promise.
