Passengers can change the behavior of boda riders

Statistics from the Traffic Department of the Uganda Police Force have since revealed that motorcycles were responsible for 45% of traffic-related deaths occurring on Uganda’s roads in 2023. The problem mainly lies with motorcyclists not adhering to the current traffic rules and regulations.

It didn’t help that those who were supposed to regulate the industry chose to stand with misguided users in opposing all regulatory efforts or look the other way. This is, however, untenable.

We recognize the importance of the boda boda industry in political mobilization, filling gaps in our public transportation systems and creating jobs. It is precisely because of its importance that it should be regulated.

Unfortunately, it is clear that our politicians will always obstruct regulation in the name of political expediency. The situation leaves passengers with no choice but to take matters into their own hands.

It is the responsibility of passengers to work to ensure their safety and protect themselves. Passengers must be able to stop passengers whenever they significantly exceed the recommended speed limit or abuse the highway code.

Most of the deaths associated with these motorcycles have been caused by acts of indiscipline manifested by the impatience and recklessness of motorcyclists, even when passengers have the power to stop them.

Passengers must take the initiative to bring about a change in behavior, either by imposing their authority on passengers or by avoiding those whose appearance and actions suggest possible risky behavior.

For example, passengers should not ride on motorcycles with welded front mudguards. This is usually a sign that the rider is not paying attention.

If a rider doesn’t have a helmet, it’s an indicator that they don’t care about their safety. Can such a driver be concerned about the safety of passengers?

A bicycle driver without side mirrors is likely untrained and, therefore, ignorant when it comes to road safety. Such a rider cannot guarantee the safety of a passenger.

A dirty, unkempt rider is irresponsible. How can you get someone who isn’t responsible enough to take care of themselves to take responsibility for your life?

A motorcyclist who crosses the road to pick you up on the other side of the road is not patient enough to obey the traffic rules. The responsibility lies with the passengers.
