ALS Walk Raises Over $65,000 to Support Those Affected by the Disease

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – A walk to support people with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) took place Saturday morning at Long Leaf Park in Wilmington.

Several Cape Fear teams worked to raise funds on behalf of family and friends living with ALS. ALS United North Carolina hosted the event and all fundraising dollars are committed to staying in North Carolina.

Family and friends said it’s events like these that show many people understand what it means to be affected by the disease.

“For those of you going through this journey, please know that you are not alone,” said Janna Maynard of Wojtech Warriors. “This illness can be very isolating. We are a community.

Together, the teams and organizations were able to raise $65,300 that will go directly to support groups nationwide, advocacy efforts and equipment programs providing free power chairs and other medical equipment for people with ALS. Fundraising will continue until the end of the year.

WECT’s Gabe Ross was the master of ceremonies for the event.
