Google has made an equity investment in Taiwanese company New Green Power (NGP), in a deal that gives the U.S. tech firm rights to purchase up to 300 MW of solar power. The companies said Google’s suppliers in the region could also access NGP’s capacity.

NGP is a large design, construction, and commissioning (EPC) and operations company for solar PV projects founded in 2009. The company plans to expand its solar project program in Taiwan to 1 GW in the coming years. NGP is a portfolio company of the climate infrastructure unit of US asset manager Blackrock.

“Our goal is to achieve net-zero emissions across our operations and value chain, supported by a goal to operate on zero-emission energy 24/7 everywhere we operate,” Amanda Peterson Corio, head of energy for Google’s data centers, said in a statement. “The path to achieving these goals is challenging and requires both commercial efforts and broader changes to energy systems.”

Google recently acquired additional solar capacity through power purchase agreements in Japan and Australia. In February, Google became the largest buyer of power purchase agreements in Europe. It has also been sourcing solar power in Taiwan for several years.
