Harry Kane-backed soccer startup raises $100 million to expand – BNN Bloomberg

(Bloomberg) — A startup planning to bring a soccer version of Topgolf to the United States has raised about $100 million from a group of investors that includes Harry Kane, captain of the England national team.

TOCA Football Inc. said its goal is to build a venue outside Dallas that would open before the city hosts 2026 World Cup matches. The company currently has two venues in England that it describes as a mix of interactive football, games and dining.

“In the same way that Topgolf was able to open golf to a whole new segment of the market, we believe we have the ability to do the same in soccer,” said TOCA CEO Yoshi Maruyama.

With this latest funding round, the company has raised a total of $233 million. The company declined to provide an assessment. According to data provider PitchBook, TOCA had an estimated value of around $450 million at the start of 2023.

Topgolf is a good company to emulate. The chain, which combines driving ranges and a sports bar atmosphere, was acquired by Callaway Brands in 2021 for $2.3 billion, including debt, according to data analyzed by Bloomberg.

TOCA’s core business is building premium soccer training centers across North America. In 2022, it entered into a partnership with Major League Soccer to grow the sport and develop high-level players. Jim Kavanaugh, owner of the league’s St. Louis City SC, has joined the latest round of funding.

For social venues and training centers, the company’s plan is to have hundreds, Maruyama said. “Our vision is to be present in virtually every metropolitan city in North America.”
