Fears ban on fireworks in St Albans could harm charity events

The ban was suggested in a motion put forward by Mike Hobday, a Labor councilor.

He described Britain as “an animal-loving nation” and said he was seeking to build on a 2020 council motion which called on the government to ban fireworks with a power higher than 90 dB during private events.

He said: “For me it is a moral question.

“We should work hard to reduce the impact of fireworks on wildlife, pets and people sensitive to noise.”

He added: “So it’s time for us to strengthen our approach… it’s time for St Albans Council to take the lead.”

“Where we control the territory, and therefore the fireworks, let us be a beacon of the practice that four years ago we asked others to emulate.”

A briefing note provided to councilors said restricting the use of fireworks would put St Albans’ annual fireworks spectacular “at risk”.

He said fireworks would be “less exciting because noise is part of the visceral attraction of a fireworks display”, adding that “quieter fireworks make for a less impressive spectacle”.

The report adds that the restrictions could have “a potential negative economic effect on community groups and their local fundraising efforts”, with the fireworks display having donated more than £900,000 to charity since its launch it forty years ago.

The proposal was referred to the council’s public realm committee on November 12.
