Lidl acquires retail sector’s first green hydrogen-powered vehicle

Following the inauguration of Europe’s first green hydrogen logistics platform in Carquefou (Loire Atlantique) in March 2022, Lidl has confirmed its commitment to environmentally friendly delivery methods. In partnership with Jacky Perrenot and Lhyfe, the company signed a charter at the 2022 Salon de l’Agriculture, committing to putting the first green hydrogen-powered truck on the road.

This truck has been operating on the Carquefou platform since the beginning of the year, delivering to Lidl supermarkets in the Nantes region. It is the first of its kind in the French transport market.

The new generation 26-tonne truck is equipped with a 100 kW fuel cell and has a range of 400 kilometres. It will be refuelled at the multi-energy station in La Roche-sur-Yon, which opened in December 2021 and will be supplied with 100% renewable green hydrogen by Lhyfe.

“We are proud to have put this first green hydrogen vehicle on the road, a significant step forward in our commitment to the energy transition,” said Xavier Pierre, Head of Transport and Environment at Lidl. “This collaboration with Lhyfe and Jacky Perrenot Group is a concrete example of our willingness to work with partners who share our values and ambitions.”

The vehicle was adapted by transport company Jacky Perrenot, which has been involved in the fight against climate change since 2012 and holds the “Objectif CO2” label for its commitment to reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The company began working with Lidl in 2020, signing a preliminary agreement at the 2020 Salon International de l’Agriculture. This in turn has resulted in the chain replacing part of its fleet with alternative energy sources every year. The first all-electric deliveries began in 2021. The new green hydrogen-powered truck marks a new stage in the commitment of both entities.
