The African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in Gauteng has expressed disappointment that none of the members of the Executive Council (MEC) appointed by Prime Minister Panyaza Lesufi are over the age of 35.

Lesufi announced a list of 10 MEC members who will form the provincial unity government, including seven from the ANC, all from the previous administration, and the rest from the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), Patriotic Alliance and Rise Mzansi.

At a press conference in Johannesburg, ANCYL representative for Gauteng Ntsako Mogobe said: “The Youth League is deeply disappointed and strongly condemns the ANC’s decision to deliberately exclude young people under the age of 35 from the executive. The ANC must explain why there are no young people in their nomination, ignoring the fact that there are capable young people under the age of 35 in the legislature who will then lead the call for youth development.”

Mogobe called on the Prime Minister to give young people more responsibility and influential positions in the legislature to ensure they play a key role in youth development in the province.

ANCYL laments lack of youth in Gauteng board

The ANCYL also praised the provincial negotiating team for upholding its values in forming a provincial unity government and not giving in to the demands of the Democratic Alliance (DA), which chose to act as the opposition in the Gauteng Parliament.

Mogobe stated: “The African National Congress Youth League strongly supports the decision taken by the ANC provincial executive committee to stand firm rather than be sidelined by the Democratic Alliance. We commend the provincial executive committee for their unwavering commitment to the principles and values of the ANC, ensuring that our party’s vision and goals are not compromised by external pressures in these negotiations.”
