Smart, Sustainable, Solar: The Future of EV Charging in Gujarat

The development of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure is poised for significant growth and evolution in the coming years. The key factors driving this growth include technological advances, supportive government policies, and growing consumer demand for electric vehicles, shared Arun Mahesh Babu, Managing Director, Gujarat Power Corporation Ltd.in exclusive interaction with Hemangini Kanth Rajput of Elets News Network (ENN).

What role do you think energy storage will play in the future of electricity grids?

Energy storage is key to grid stability and enabling greater integration of renewable energy. We are investing in battery technology to optimise energy distribution and reduce losses. Energy storage captures excess renewable energy, reducing the greenhouse gas emissions that would be produced by conventional fossil fuel backup generation. Storage helps to keep power systems in balance despite fluctuations in wind and solar availability, enabling cost-effective deep decarbonisation without compromising reliability.

What initiatives has UGVCL taken to promote grid-scale energy storage?

We have implemented Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) through Gujarat Power Corporation Limited at Modhera, Gujarat, which is a significant step towards increasing energy efficiency and grid stability. BESS technology enables storage of excess energy generated during periods of low demand, which can be released during periods of peak demand, balancing supply and demand more efficiently. This capability is particularly beneficial for integrating renewable energy sources such as solar and wind, which are common in Gujarat but are intermittent in nature. By implementing BESS, GPCL can mitigate the variability of renewable energy, reduce dependence on conventional power plants and increase the overall reliability of the power grid.

The implementation of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) in Modhera, Gujarat, is a pioneering initiative in the energy landscape of India. Known for its historic Sun Temple, Modhera is transforming into a model of renewable energy utilization and sustainable development. The installation of BESS in Modhera enables the city to store excess solar energy during the day, ensuring stable and reliable power supply even after sunset. This system enhances the integration of renewable energy by solving the intermittency issues associated with solar energy, thus providing continuous, round-the-clock, clean energy to its residents. With the implementation of BESS, Modhera has become a sustainable, energy-efficient city, paving the way for wider adoption of such technologies across the country.

How do you imagine the development of electric vehicle charging infrastructure?

The development of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure is poised for significant growth and evolution in the coming years. Key factors driving this growth include technological advances, supportive government policies, and growing consumer demand for electric vehicles.

We foresee a robust expansion of charging networks in urban centres and on major highways, supporting a range of charging speeds and types to meet the diverse needs of EV owners. Integration of renewable energy sources such as solar will play a key role, aligning with the state’s ambitious renewable energy targets and promoting sustainable transport solutions. Smart charging technologies will optimise energy consumption, leveraging Gujarat’s strengths in digital infrastructure and artificial intelligence to effectively manage grid demand. Government policies that encourage infrastructure investment and mandate EV-friendly urban planning will accelerate adoption, ensuring convenient access to charging facilities in residential areas, shopping malls and public spaces. This holistic approach supports clean mobility goals and positions Gujarat at the forefront of India’s transformation towards a greener and more energy-efficient transport ecosystem.

How do you think solar charging stations for electric vehicles will contribute to a sustainable energy future?

Solar EV charging points are key to reducing carbon emissions and promoting clean energy. They offer long-term cost savings from free solar power upon installation and can be flexibly deployed in a variety of locations, including remote areas. They also drive wider adoption of renewable energy technologies, driving innovation and supporting global green mobility initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve climate goals.

Integrating solar power with EV charging supports the adoption of renewable energy sources, increases grid stability by mitigating stress during peak demand, and provides scalable and flexible solutions for different locations. They also increase resilience during power outages and promote environmental protection, paving the way for a cleaner, more sustainable energy ecosystem.

What message do you have for the industry regarding the future of energy distribution?

The future of energy distribution lies in the adoption of disruptive technologies such as energy storage, EV charging infrastructure and renewable energy integration. The industry must prioritize innovation and sustainability by better integrating renewable energy sources such as solar and wind into the grid. Collaboration and innovation are essential for a sustainable energy future. Digitalization, through advanced data analytics, IoT and AI, is revolutionizing energy distribution by optimizing grid performance, predicting maintenance needs and managing demand more efficiently. A customer-centric approach, providing consumers with real-time energy usage data, dynamic pricing and personalized energy solutions, will increase engagement and satisfaction.
